タンパク質は、たくさんのアミノ酸がペプチド結合でつながった単なるヒモ状の物質です。しかし、これが折りたたまれて特有の立体構造をとると、実に高度な機能を持つようになります。
私たちの研究室では、このようなタンパク質の形と機能の関係に興味を持って研究を進めています。
ゆで卵が固まるのは、卵に含まれるタンパク質の立体構造が熱によって崩れてヒモ状になり(変性)、さらにそれが絡まりあってしまう(凝集)ためです。これは極端な例ですが、タンパク質の立体構造は、実はとても不安定で、細胞内でも変性や凝集は頻繁に起こります。私たちが注目する分子シャペロンというタンパク質は、変性したタンパク質の凝集を防いだり、一度凝集したものをほどいたりすることで、タンパク質が正しい立体構造をとるのを助けます。これは、ゆで卵が固まるのを防いだり、生卵に戻したりしているようなものです。私たちは、単なる物質であるはずのタンパク質が、どうやってこのような複雑な仕事をこなしているのか、分子レベルで説明することを目指しています。
生命現象の一番根っこにあるタンパク質のはたらきを、分子レベルで明らかにすることで、生命の不思議に少しでも近づけたらと思っています。
