Activities

In each class we'll have a short quiz based on the reading homework in our textbook. Check the calendar to see which reading will be the subject of each of these weekly quizzes. The results of these quizzes are 20% of your final grade for the course.

When one of these quizzes is taken outside of the classroom as part of a web-based class, it must be completed within 10 minutes after being accessed. For each minute above 10, one point will be subtracted from your score. For example, if the time stamp on your submitted quiz is 13 minutes, that is 3 minutes over the limit, so 3 points will be subtracted from your score. (This time restriction is used as a way to minimize possible cheating on the quiz.)

There are 12 chapters in our textbook, and so a total of 12 reading quizzes. From these 12, I will only calculate your best 10 results into your grade. This means you can dismiss your two worst scores (if you do them all), or you will not be penalized up to two times for missing a quiz due to absence or to forgetting your smartphone.)
Reflection means 感想 or 省察 in Japanese. Sometimes in class you may have some opinions or comments or thoughts about the topic that we are studying, but you don't have an opportunity to express them to me and your classmates in real time. When this happens, use our Flipgrid app to record yourself speaking in English for 2~3 minutes about the topic.

You need to upload at least 2* of these reflection videos during the semester. There are 15 classes, and you cannot make more than 1 video per class, so don't wait until the end!

Your reflection videos are worth 20% of your final grade for this course.

(* This was change from 4 videos @ 5 points each to 2 videos @ 10 points each. Our class voted for this change in early December.)
When you write one of these, you can react to the textbook reading assignment in any way that you want to. For example, maybe write about something that surprised you? Or interested you? Or something you disagree with?  Or something that connects to an experience in your own life?
Post your Reading Reaction as a comment at the bottom of the matching Sharepoint Lesson. Each Reading Reaction needs to be written in English and at least 60 words long.

You need to post at least 4 of these reading reactions during the semester. There are 12 Units in our textbook, and you cannot post more than 1 reaction per per unit or lesson, so don't wait until the end!

Your reading reactions are worth 20% of your final grade for this course. The exam will cover both contect and key English vocabulary that we have learned in this course. More information abou the final exam will be provided in class.
Your final exam score is worth 20% of your final grade for this course.
