GRADUATE SCHOOL OF NATURAL SCIENCE

Basic Educational Policies for the Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science’s Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program

In accordance with the educational philosophy set forth by Konan University’s founder Hachisaburo Hirao, who believed in the “promotion of health, cultivation of character, respect of individuality and harnessing of one’s innate talents”, Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science’s Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program aims to cultivate graduates with strong ethical values who, based on their general undergraduate education and the specialized training accompanying this, have independently and consistently carried out investigations/research and acquired a high level of expertise in basic and applied fields for a broad range of topics such as telecommunications, human intelligence and machine intelligence. The basic educational policy for our Master’s Program is to cultivate highly-skilled professionals who possess the necessary abilities for engaging in technical operations related to intelligent systems and informatics as well as researchers with a rich and advanced skillset in research and development. For our Doctoral Program, the basic educational policy is to cultivate independent researchers who possess an exceptional ability for original R&D as well as highly-skilled professionals who can offer the outstanding abilities necessary to carry out advanced technical operations related to intelligent systems and informatics.

Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program DP (policies on degree conferment)

Candidates are required to have been enrolled in the Graduate School of Natural Science for the designated period and must have acquired the prescribed number of credits (a total of 30 or more credits, including 18 credits from required courses and 12 credits from electives) after completing the stipulated courses in accordance with our educational and research philosophies and objectives and must also have passed the final examinations and thesis review within the prescribed number of years after finishing their directed study.

[Doctoral Program]

The Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science’s Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program will confer doctoral degrees (in natural science, engineering or information) to students with a high level of ethical values who work to develop and expand new fields of research and possess the ability to discover and solve problems, while being capable of responding to changes in the field of intelligent systems and informatics related to the subdivision, integration and cross-disciplinary exploration of theories and technology.

Candidates are required to have been enrolled in the Graduate School of Natural Science for the designated period and must have acquired the prescribed number of credits (a total of 10 or more credits, including at least 2 credits from primary electives, 2 credits from secondary electives and 6 credits from tertiary electives) after completing the stipulated courses in accordance with our educational and research philosophies and objectives and must also have passed the final examinations and thesis review within the prescribed number of years after finishing their directed study.

Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program CP (policies on the formulation and implementation of education curricula)

[Master’s Program]

The Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science’s Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program formulates and implements curricula composed of basic subjects for acquiring a broad range of fundamental knowledge and a high level of expertise in both the basics and applied fields of intelligent systems and informatics. In order to cultivate highly-skilled professionals and researchers with the knowledge and skills required for problem-solving, this program also formulates and implements curricula composed of required specialized courses so that students may obtain the skillset necessary to engage in technical operations related to intelligent systems and informatics as well as the ability to carry out richly creative and advanced research and development. Within our organizational framework of directed study and education, students undertake special research in intelligent systems and informatics and are assisted in acquiring their master’s degree after giving midterm and master’s thesis presentations (concurrent with final examinations) and undergoing a master’s thesis review.

[Doctoral Program]

The Konan University Graduate School of Natural Science’s Intelligent Systems and Informatics Program formulates and implements curricula composed of special lectures and seminars in order to cultivate highly-capable professionals and researchers with advanced knowledge and skills in intelligent systems and informatics. This program also formulates and implements curricula so that graduates are able to develop and expand new fields of research, acquire the ability to discover and solve problems and adapt to changes and developments in their field of study such as the subdivision, integration and cross-disciplinary exploration of theories and technology. Within our organizational framework of directed study and education, students are assisted in acquiring their doctoral degree after giving midterm and doctoral thesis presentations (concurrent with final examinations) and undergoing a doctoral thesis review.
