A Life-Changing Study Abroad Experience in Japan /

My study abroad experience was one I will hold dearly for many years to come.
I was able to gain new viewpoints and earn a far better appreciation and understanding about Japanese life and the language itself. Starting with the opportunity to stay with a Japanese homestay was one that resulted in lifelong connections and relationships that will stay with me. From the kindness shown, working together as a cohesive unit, and the way we celebrated together, I will never forget the family who took me in. During my time studying, I joined the school’s rugby team as well. Through this, I got to experience persevering with my teammates, working towards a similar goal, and being physically active. Additionally, it was an exceptional opportunity to work on my Japanese speaking skills and learn about Japanese club culture. The connections made here as well I anticipate to remain for a lifetime. The classroom was another great place as well. The teachers worked diligently to ensure we were learning and afterwards, spending time on campus, allowed me to meet Japanese students my age. Getting to talk, learn about them, but also share my experiences from the United States and engage in meaningful cultural exchange. One of the best aspects of the study abroad course as a whole was the immersion in Japan itself. Being surrounded by the language daily may sound tiring, but quickly, I found myself in a rhythm. Soon, Japanese became second nature to me with how often it is used in daily life and soon it reflected in the classroom. I became more confident as a speaker, kanji was gradually more familiar, and I had a better understanding about Japanese as a whole. From here, I have plans to continue pursuing education relating to Japan and the language. With the tools given to me, I feel far more confident, able to be more flexible, and with a larger capacity to work with Japanese as the medium for not only school, but for a career. Given the opportunity to do it again, I would certainly find myself missing home, but the opportunities and experiences that you can gain in the program are second to none.
