For universities looking to provide their students with short-term Japan-based study tours, Konan University is a great choice. We have plenty of experience in designing such programs to meet the unique needs of each of our visiting groups. These short-term programs tend to range in duration from just a few days up to approximately two weeks. They typically involve guest lectures by Konan professors, experiential learning opportunities related to Japanese traditional culture, field trips, company visits, and exchange events with Konan students.
Experiential Learning
At Konan we have a hands-on approach to learning, and this is especially true when hosting groups who have come from overseas to be with us for only a short time. In these cases, we strive to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to encounter real Japanese culture up close. For example, we can provide programs in which students learn about and participate in the Japanese tea ceremony (sado), and try their hand at Japanese calligraphy (shodo). Students can also practice the delicate art of Japanese flower arrangement (kado), and see a traditional stage performance (noh). Cooking traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) together is also an option, as is experiencing a performance of powerful Japanese drumming (wadaiko) at which students can try out the drums for themselves. These and many other opportunities to directly encounter aspects of Japan's rich and deep culture can be arranged in these short-term programs.
Destinations
Ideally located in the heart of the Kansai region, Konan is the perfect base for exploring all the treasures that western Japan has to offer. Popular field trip destinations include Osaka and downtown Kobe which are both only about 30 minutes from campus, and historic Kyoto which can be reached in roughly an hour. Beyond these three major cities, the old capitol of Nara, the castle town of Himeji, and the famous mountaintop Buddhist monasteries collectively known as Koya-san area all within a couple of hours from campus.
Company Visits
Konan University has three particularly strong academic departments related to business and management, and thanks to our alumni we have deep roots in the Kansai region's business community. Thus, one consistently popular option for the short-term programs we design is the visits to Japanese companies that we can arrange. Recent programs have included visits to food and beverage companies, makers of stationary and furniture, carpentry, amusement park management, warehousing, and shipbuilding.
Cross-Cultural Friendships
We recruit our internationally-minded Konan students for participation in all short-term programs, and one of the most important aspects of any of these study tours is the interaction that occurs among the students. Visiting students will have plenty of chances to explore Kobe with their Japanese counterparts in their free time.
